What is underpinning?
Underpinning a foundation is literally careful undermining of a foundation sections at a time. It is by digging down small sections at a time that we are able to reinforce the foundation without the house collapsing. After the first set of holes are dug under the foundation, concrete is poured. When the concrete is cured or hardened we can move onto the next section and so on until the whole foundation is reinforced. This is done to strengthen a compromised structure or it can be undertaken because you want to gain more space in the basement.
Why do people bother underpinning their homes?
Your home is probably one of your greatest financial investments. Increasing the ceiling height in your basement will not just add tremendous value to your investment, it will be something you can enjoy for years to come.
